Hello, I am Priyanka Sarawagi
My journey to becoming a Chartered Accountant (CA) was far from straightforward, but it's a story of perseverance, dedication, and the unwavering support of my loved ones. Looking back, I am proud to have cleared my CA on my fourth attempt in 2019, a moment that marked a turning point in my life.
I belong to Kolkata and completed my schooling at St. Joans High School between 2000 and 2013. After that, I pursued my B.Com Honors in Accounting and Finance at Shri Shikshayatan College from 2013 to 2015.
The inspiration to pursue a CA designation was deeply rooted in the encouragement of my mother. She shared stories of her uncle's achievements as a CA, instilling in me the belief that I could achieve the same. Her unwavering faith in my abilities pushed me to embark on the challenging path of becoming a CA, setting the tone for the trials and triumphs that lay ahead. Being the first CA in my family and the sole one on my father's side was a rewarding accomplishment that added an extra layer of motivation to my pursuit.
I want to dedicate this success to my family, my mother who has been a constant support during my journey. Without them, I wouldn't have done CA. My story is a testament to the fact that hard work, determination, and unwavering support can pave the way for achieving their dream goals.
Challenges and Lessons
My path to becoming a CA was not without its difficulties. A personal anecdote stands out: While filling out my CPT (Common Proficiency Test) form, my cousin questioned my decision. He mentioned that the rigorous journey of a CA demanded immense dedication and long hours of relentless work. Initially, I remained determined, but as I progressed to the second level, the weight of his words became apparent. The realization that he was right hit me, and I understood the extent of effort required.
Shifting Focus From Auditing to Finance
During my internship, I found myself drawn to auditing, yet my academic inclinations always leaned towards the finance side of the spectrum. My dream job was to become a credit analyst. However, fate had other plans as I joined PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), where the Mergers and Acquisitions department captured my attention. My affinity for mathematics and my previous inclinations aligned with the complex world of M&A.
What is any thought that you followed during your whole journey?
A never-give-up attitude became the cornerstone of my journey. Regardless of setbacks and doubts, I clung to the belief that if others could overcome challenges, so could I. This mindset served as a guiding light during the most testing moments of my journey. My experiences working in a CA firm fueled my determination as I observed the success of my senior colleagues and partners.
To maintain my spirit during lengthy study sessions, I developed a unique technique. Whenever weariness set in, I would compile a list of names—friends, acquaintances—who had overcome their own challenges. These names transformed into sources of motivation, reminding me that if they could achieve their goals amid life's obstacles, so could I.
The "Woohooo" Girl: A Term Coined by Friends to Capture My Enthusiasm
Amidst challenges and triumphs, my friends coined the term "Woohoo girl." because whenever I used to get excited I used to say this word. This expresses the enthusiastic exclamation of "woohoo" during moments of immense joy. The term serves as a reminder of the optimism and enthusiasm that have fueled my journey.
Guiding Advice: Nurturing Focus amid Distractions for Lasting Change
Navigating distractions and setbacks is an inevitable part of any journey. However, the ability to remain focused on one's goals is the key to transformative success. I've learned that challenges are not roadblocks but stepping stones to growth. Despite facing financial struggles, personal issues, and even mental health challenges during my CA journey, holding onto my goal proved pivotal.

The year 2019 stands out as one of the most trying periods of my life. Financial difficulties, personal challenges, and mental health issues converged during my CA journey. However, the resilience I cultivated and the support of my loved ones propelled me forward.
Balancing Act: Managing Professional and Personal Life with Support
My journey's success has been supported by the balance between my professional and personal life. Working from home has afforded me the opportunity to manage my responsibilities effectively. Crucially, my husband's unwavering encouragement and my family's support have been pillars of strength. My mother's wisdom—prioritize your career—has been a guiding principle that has shaped my trajectory.
As I reflect on my journey from struggling through attempts to clearing my CA and thriving in my professional role, I am reminded that challenges are just stepping stones to success.
