Hello Readers,

Did you hear?

J&K and Haryana elections have come to an end!

The Indian states of Haryana and J&K went through a nerve-wracking election recently as both elections were consistently in the headlines. While Haryana’s elections were important, J&K’s elections were particularly high profile as this was the first election for the state in a decade and since 2019 when the Modi government abrogated Article 370 and removed its special status! With national parties like BJP and Congress fighting against regional players like PDP and NC, what was the result?

NC-Congress won Kasmir!

The Indian National Congress (INC), which allied with the regional National Conference (NC) has prevailed in J&K. The alliance won the election for the 90-seat assembly and garnered a majority of 49 wherein the NC alone got 42 seats! While the INC got only 6 seats, the ruling party BJP got its highest count to date at 29! The regional party of PDP, which was a former BJP ally, managed to secure only 3 seats. What now?

Omar Abdullah will be the CM of Kashmir!

In a shocking turn of events, 4 independent MLAs have extended their support to Omar Abdullah’s NC, helping the party get 46 seats and cross the required majority all by itself! According to NC chief Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah will return as the CM of J&K as legislators from NC have given him their approval. This indicates that the Kashmiri party does not need the INC’s support to form its government in Kashmir, adding to the existing troubles of the INC. What troubles?

Congress lost in Haryana, BJP in for third term!

The ruling party BJP has secured its third term in Haryana as it came back to power with its biggest mandate ever: 48 out of 90 seats! In a major hit, the INC secured only 37 seats while Arvind Kejriwal’s AAP got no seats in the state. The INC has called its defeat in Haryana ‘unexpected’ while PM Modi has praised the BJP’s performance and thanked the people for giving the party another majority!! But that’s not the end!

Congress is a “sore loser”!??

News articles are calling the INC a “sore loser” and “bad sport,” as it has now claimed that the EVMs in Haryana were tampered with! INC bigwig Jairam Ramesh claims that the party was speaking with the Election Commission over complaints regarding the EVMs and results that “were against ground reality”. Other politicians have slammed the INC’s allegations as the Election Commission has agreed to meet with the leaders but called their allegation an “undemocratic rejection of the will of the people”!!

Interestingly, did you know Data plays a big role in these elections?

Yes, you read that right!
