Hello Reader,
Have you heard?
India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is now in the UAE!

This week, PM Narendra Modi was on a two-day trip to the UAE where India’s UPI was linked with the UAE’s instant payment platform AANI. The UAE was the third country this week (after Sri Lanka and Mauritius) and the seventh country overall, where the UPI was launched! They also signed an agreement to interlink domestic debit/credit cards- RUPAY from India and JAYWAN from the UAE. This will simplify transfers between both countries and boost cooperation in the Fintech sector. Time to move to Dubai?
But that’s not all. PM Narendra Modi was in the UAE for another reason. He was there to inaugurate the first Hindu Mandir in the UAE!

The BAPS Hindu temple in the UAE was inaugurated by PM Modi on 14th February, the day of Saraswati Puja. This temple is an architectural marvel featuring both modern and traditional elements. Multiple Hindu deities such as Lord Ram, Sita, Lakshman and Hanuman, Lord Shiv, Parvati, Ganpati, Kartikeya, Lord Jagannath, Radha-Krishna, and many more have been featured in the temple as this brings cooperation between both countries to a new level. Talk about good relations!
Speaking of relations, our relations with Myanmar could sour. India is fencing its borders with Myanmar!

With Myanmar going through a civil war, India is worried about the influx of refugees and militants. Moreover, several Kuki groups have claimed that the Free Movement Regime (FMR) between India and Myanmar, which allows nationals from both sides to travel 16 kms in each other’s territories, allowed the smuggling of narcotics, prompting the decision to fence the borders and scrap the FMR. Local communities who share ethnic ties with Myanmar have appealed against the Centre’s plan to fence the 1,643 kms border as it would be detrimental to cultural connections. Are neighbourly relations over national safety?
Speaking of neighbours, how can we forget Pakistan.

Pakistan’s political landscape was no better than a TV drama as the country carried out its ‘most-rigged’ election. The Army indulged in massive pre-poll rigging to favour disgraced ex-PM Nawaz Sharif’s PML-N party while Imran Khan was imprisoned and his PTI party was stripped of its symbol. The twist in the drama came when PTI’s independent candidates managed to nab the most seats! Despite that, the PML-N formed a coalition with the PPP and 4 other parties to make their government. Political drama of the highest quality!
But their troubles are not India’s priority. India is facing troubles of its own. Farmers have begun protesting once again!!

After the famous 16-month protest of 2020, farmers from 200+ unions coming in from Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, are heading to Delhi for protests once again! Thousands of farmers are now demanding pensions, compensation for those killed in 2020 protests, debt waivers, and a legally guaranteed MSP! According to reports, farmer groups are demanding an MSP which is 50% higher than the production cost. According to government officials, a guaranteed MSP would lead to an extra expenditure of Rs 10 lakh crores, which is almost equal to infra spending targets!!
Interestingly, India is not the only country where farmers are protesting. European farmers are protesting too!

France, Germany, Spain, Belgium, Italy, Poland, Greece, Romania, and Lithuania are also witnessing fierce protests by farmers! The main reason for the protests are controversial agricultural laws introduced by the EU. These laws include a phase-out of tax cuts on agricultural diesel, leaving part of the farmland fallow, and subsidy cuts! Although these are in line with Europe’s plan to become carbon-neutral by 2050, it is affecting farmers’ income. Another complaint is that with rising costs for farmers, governments are not doing much to restrict the inflow of cheap produce! Should farmers stop farming?
But farm issues are the least of Europe’s concerns. Europe might face a Russian attack, and the US won’t save it!!

In a recent rally in South Carolina, ex-US President Donald Trump spoke about how the US was unjustly bearing the cost of protecting Europe. He said that as the President, he would not protect a NATO country that was not paying its share! Estonia recently warned that Russia was preparing for a long-term conflict with the West, thereby spiking tensions in the already bleak geopolitical scenario.
