Australian Parliament saw a ‘fishy’ protest!

newsletter

An Australian Parliament session turned particularly ‘fishy’ recently when a senator pulled out an actual dead fish in the Parliament! Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young brought an entire dead salmon in a plastic bag as she debated against the new law allowing salmon farming in the world heritage site of Macquarie Harbour! The Greens party has argued that salmon farming would cause chemical pollution in the harbour and endanger the rare species in the region. However, despite the arguments, the law was passed in the Parliament!! What else?

Indonesian students are protesting!

newsletter

A violent student protest erupted outside Indonesia's parliament as 1,000 demonstrators clashed with police, hurling stones and Molotov cocktails. In response, authorities deployed water cannons and arrested over 20 students. These protests were due to a recent amendment to military law that allowed military personnel to hold civilian positions in 15 government institutions! While the military has ruled out any issues, democratic groups claim the law would allow officers to exert influence in civilian matters, as some fear Indonesia regressing back to the time of Suharto’s dictatorial rule!! What else?

Turkiye witnessed massive protests against Erdogan!

Tens of thousands of people took to the streets in dozens of cities in Turkiye to protest against incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The outrage began when Ekrem Imamoglu, mayor of Istanbul and President Erdogan’s direct rival, was arrested by authorities days before being selected as a Presidential candidate! Imamoglu was charged with crimes like bribery, extortion, corruption, and aiding a terrorist organization! The Opposition has called the arrest an attack on democracy, as protesters took to the streets to save the democratic process! What else?

Protests in Chile turned violent!

newsletter

Hundreds of fishermen gathered outside the National Congress in Valparaiso, Chile, to protest against the delay in voting on a new controversial fishing bill! Protests turned violent after some protesters tried to enter the building and break down a gate, prompting the police to retaliate using water cannons, tear gas, and batons. This bill sought to redistribute the quotas between industrial and artisanal fishermen in favour of the latter. However, the bill was changed to favour industrial fishers when it was sent to the Upper House, sparking outrage! What else?

Gazans are protesting against Hamas!

In a complete twist, Gazans, who cheered and celebrated Hamas for its atrocities on October 7th, have begun protesting against it! Thousands of Gazans marched through the ruins of a destroyed town in Gaza, chanting “Hamas out”! Such protests were carried out across multiple cities as thousands called for an end to the war against Israel and for Hamas to relinquish control of the Gaza Strip! Hamas has labelled all protesters traitors and blamed Israel for sowing discord. Israel has maintained that the war would not end until Hamas returns the remaining 59 hostages and gives up its control of Gaza. This protest is a product of Hamas’ barbarity and a sign of Gazans seeking peace!
