Hello Readers,

Did you hear?

RCB won the Indian Premier League 2025!

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) clinched their maiden IPL title, defeating Punjab Kings in the 2025 final. Virat Kohli, visibly emotional, celebrated the historic win after 18 years of RCB’s wait. The victory sparked massive celebrations across Bengaluru, with fans flooding the streets and social media. Kohli credited the team’s perseverance and unity for the breakthrough. The final, marked by intense moments, saw standout performances from RCB’s top order and bowlers, sealing a memorable triumph in front of ecstatic home supporters. But the celebration soon turned to tragedy!

The celebration claimed 11 lives!

A stampede at Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium during RCB’s IPL victory celebrations left 11 dead and several injured. Authorities estimate over 40,000 people gathered, far exceeding the venue’s safe capacity. The crowd surged after reports of free passes being distributed, leading to chaos at entry points. Eyewitnesses cited overcrowding and lack of crowd control as key triggers. Most casualties occurred near Gates B and C. Officials confirmed that inadequate planning and last-minute changes contributed to the tragic crowd crush. What now?

Reports claim politicians forced the event!

A day after the Bengaluru stampede at an RCB celebration event, reports revealed political pressure for immediate celebrations despite police concerns. Sources indicated the RCB team and state leaders bypassed security advice. Union Minister Pralhad Joshi blamed the Karnataka government, alleging ministers prioritized selfies over safety. Investigations show overlapping events, poor crowd control, and stretched police resources contributed to the tragedy. The event lacked central planning, with both RCB and the state reportedly insisting on independent arrangements, worsening the situation. What next?

Ugly political slugfest breaks out over the stampede!

A political blame game erupted in Karnataka following the RCB victory celebration chaos. The BJP accused the Congress government of gross mismanagement and demanded a probe by a High Court judge. It also sought Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s resignation, alleging administrative failure. In response, the CM dismissed top police officials and blamed overcrowding. BJP leaders questioned Congress leaders' presence at the event, calling it a publicity stunt. Meanwhile, Congress defended its actions, accusing the BJP of politicizing an unfortunate situation. Who was arrested?

An RCB top official has been arrested!!

Bengaluru Police arrested RCB marketing head Nikhil Sosale at the airport while he was en route to Mumbai, in connection with the April 17 stampede at Chinnaswamy Stadium. Sosale, a key official of DNA Entertainment Networks, and three others were detained over alleged lapses in ticket distribution for the RCB-CSK match, which led to one death and several injuries. The arrests follow a detailed investigation and an FIR based on complaints of overcrowding and mismanagement during the event. While cricket is the heart of India’s sports fandom, such events are a shameful blot on the sport and its fans!!

Speak of cricket, did you hear? Data Analytics is being used in Cricket!!

Yes, you read that right!

Gone are the days when coaches had to sit for hours to decode players’ performance metrics or players to sit for hours to watch their competitors and counter their strategies. Data can do that within minutes!

Data Analytics is being used in all cricket matches, Test, ODI, or IPL, in the following manner:-

  • Player Selection
Analytics assess player performance across formats, conditions, and opposition strength. It helps uncover consistency, adaptability, and high-impact moments in a player’s career. Domestic and franchise data are mined to spot rising talent and hidden gems and ensures data-backed, merit-driven selection rather than intuition alone.
  • Order of Players
Batting order is optimized using data on strike rates, pressure handling, and scoring zones. Matchup history against specific bowlers plays a key role in sequencing. Situational awareness—like chasing vs setting a target—guides the arrangement as data analytics allow flexible, performance-based changes mid-series or match.
  • Fielding Strategies
Ball-tracking and heatmap data reveal where batsmen commonly score or miscue shots. Fielders are positioned based on these predictive patterns for maximum efficiency. Opposition-specific strategies minimize boundaries and force errors, and also aid in planning powerplay and death-over fielding layouts.
  • Bowling Picks
Data reveals which bowlers perform best under specific match conditions and phases. Matchups with batsmen are analyzed for past success or vulnerability and pitch behavior and weather data guide spin vs pace choices. Bowling combinations are simulated for optimal over-by-over impact.
  • Fitness Tracking
Wearables and GPS devices monitor movement, speed, workload, and recovery rates as analytics detect fatigue patterns to prevent injuries before they occur. Player training loads are customized based on real-time and historical data, thus ensuring peak performance and longevity throughout a season.
  • Game Records
Every ball, shot, and player action is logged to build rich historical datasets. Coaches use these records to review patterns, decision outcomes, and performance under pressure. Detailed reviews of past games help refine future tactics and become the foundation for trend spotting and benchmarking.
  • Win-Loss Analysis
Key performance indicators from wins and losses are compared and visualized. Factors like partnerships, dot-ball pressure, or death-over economy are assessed as this feedback loop sharpens team strategies and individual roles. Over time, it drives evidence-based improvements in playbooks.
  • Cricket Metrics
Advanced metrics like control percentage, false shot rate, and expected wickets are tracked. These go beyond averages to reveal the quality and context of performance. Situational stats (e.g., pressure index, impact in chases) add deeper insight and support smarter decisions in scouting, coaching, and match play.

Interestingly, there is a separate career path for this: Cricket Analyst!!

While the career is still in its nascent stages today, cricket analysts are being recruited by clubs at hefty packages to help coaches leverage modern technology to improve their team’s chances of winning. Devraj Raut is India’s most prominent cricket analyst who has been serving as the Cricket Performance Analyst of India A & India U-19 teams since 2015!

Moreover, Gaurav Gangwal is one of the best analysts in recent times as he made a fortune predicting match outcomes, giving guidance, and building teams on apps like Dream11.

The best part? The salary of a fresher cricket analyst in India is currently between Rs 7-12 LPA!
